Diving Bell

Diving Bell

The Diving Bell is an underwater inspection device used by naval divers to examine parts of a ship that remain submerged below the waterline. Before modern diving support systems became common, diving bells provided a safer and more stable environment for underwater inspections and maintenance work.
When a ship is suspected of having underwater damage, a diver is lowered inside the diving bell to inspect the affected area. From within the bell, the diver can closely examine the ship’s hull, identify structural damage, and assess the extent of repairs required.
After completing the inspection, the diver prepares a detailed report. Based on this assessment, additional divers, repair teams, or specialized equipment may be deployed to carry out underwater maintenance and restoration work.
The diving bell played an important role in naval operations by enabling underwater inspections without requiring divers to remain continuously exposed to the surrounding water, thereby improving safety and operational efficiency.
