The Scale Model of INS Vikrant represents India's first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier, symbolizing the nation's growing self-reliance in naval shipbuilding and maritime defence. Constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited under the guidance of the Directorate of Naval Design, INS Vikrant is one of the most advanced warships ever built in India.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 2 September 2022, INS Vikrant marked a historic milestone in India's maritime history. The commissioning ceremony was led by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, signifying India's entry into an elite group of nations capable of designing and constructing aircraft carriers.
The aircraft carrier serves as the flagship of the Indian Navy's Carrier Battle Group and is designed to project naval power across the Indian Ocean Region. Equipped with a modern flight deck and advanced aviation facilities, INS Vikrant can operate a variety of fixed-wing fighter aircraft and helicopters, enabling air defence, anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief operations.
The scale model displayed at the Indian Naval Maritime Museum has been meticulously crafted by the Construction Department of the Naval Ship Repair Yard (Kochi). Built to a 1:150 scale, the model accurately reproduces the external features, flight deck, island superstructure, and aircraft arrangement of the original vessel. It was presented to the museum by the Admiral Superintendent, Naval Ship Repair Yard (Kochi) as a tribute to India's remarkable achievement in indigenous warship construction.
Today, this model stands as a symbol of India's technological excellence, naval engineering capabilities, and commitment to safeguarding the nation's maritime interests. It offers visitors a detailed insight into the design, engineering, and strategic importance of one of the most powerful assets of the Indian Navy.
