This historic trophy was presented on 30 July 1947 by the officers and men who were to become part of the Pakistan Navy to the officers and men who were to serve in the Indian Navy. The presentation took place during the division of the naval assets of British India, shortly before India and Pakistan became independent nations in August 1947.
At that time, the Royal Indian Navy was being reorganised and divided between the two newly created countries. Naval ships, shore establishments, equipment, personnel and other resources had to be allocated separately to India and Pakistan. This process marked the end of a shared naval organisation and the beginning of two independent naval forces.
The trophy was offered as a ceremonial parting gift and carried a message of goodwill between naval personnel who had previously served together. Its inscription, “Goodbye and Good Luck,” reflects the spirit in which the officers and sailors separated despite the political and administrative changes surrounding Partition.
Beyond its decorative value, the trophy represents an important transition in South Asian maritime history.
